Kagome Higurashi was just a normal teenage girl living in Tokyo at the Sunset Shrine in the year 1997. Then, on the day of her fifteenth birthday, she stumbled into an old well on the shrine that her family cared for. A centipede demon grabed her and demanded that Kagome give her the Shikon Jewel. Having no idea what the demon was talking about, she panicked and somehow emitted a purple light from her hands that appeared to kill the demon.

After climbing back out of the well, she saw that she was in a forest. Running to where her house should be, she found a tree with a boy pinned to it. Then villagers from a nearby village attacked her thinking she was a shape shifting demon. The priestess of the village, Kaede, noticed that Kagome strongly resembled her dead sister, Kikyou.

During their conversation, the demon attacked again. Kagome ran to the tree that the boy was pinned to, and after being injured by the demon, she set the boy free. The boy immediately demanded that she hand over the jewel. By this time Kaede arrived and placed a magical necklace on the boy. The necklace would immobilize him if Kagome said the word "sit". Kaede explains to her how the boy, Inuyasha, was pinned to the tree. She also concluded that Kagome is the reincarnation of Kikyou.

Later that day, the jewel was stolen by a crow demon and was shattered into many pieces which scattered all over the land. Being the reincarnation of Kikyou, Kagome was also blessed with a sixth sense enabling her to find the jewel shards. She also seemed to inherit some of Kikyou's archery skills, though her powers were still seriously under-developed.
